SEAmagine Aurora Submersible Makes Scientific Discovery
Scientific journal publishes first ever recorded sighting of a “Prickly Shark" in French Polynesia
December, 2021
SEAmagine is pleased that one of its Aurora submersibles was involved in a scientific discovery earlier this year. Just published in Cybium, an International Journal of Ichtyology, the scientific paper titled “First record of prickly shark Echinorhinus cookei (Pietschmann, 1928) (Chondrichthyes: Echinorhinidae) in French Polynesia (Eastern Tropical Pacific)” written by Eric Clua, and 3 other authors, explains how a SEAmagine submersible’s dive allowed the observation of a mature male prickly shark at 500 m depth on the outer slope of the barrier reef off the island of Moorea. This is the first time ever that a sighting of this shark species in French Polynesia was done. This discovery made while diving from for a private yacht demonstrates the value gained from any deep submersible dive, whether they are performed by the general public or by scientists.
The video clip shows footage taken during the submersible dive when the shark discovery was made.

ABSTRACT
"A submarine dive allowed the observation of a mature male individual of the prickly shark Echinorhinus cookei (Pietschmann, 1928) at –500 m depth on the outer slope of the barrier reef off the island of Moorea (Society Islands, French Polynesia). This identification extends the range of this species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, between Hawaii in the West and the Peruvian coasts in the East.""
